Investment Insights: Week Ending October 17

Last Friday, trade headlines returned after the Trump administration announced fresh tariffs on China. The news fueled a market sell-off, and the S&P 500 had its worst daily performance since the depths of the post-Liberation Day shock in April. The Volatility Index (VIX) also popped above 20 to its highest level since May.

With this, the Street had its guard up going into Monday’s market opening. A recurring story played out, however, where the administration’s rhetoric softened and markets almost entirely recovered from the pullback in just a few days of trading. Volatility has been uncharacteristically low for this time of year, and we continue to see that momentum in equities has remained a strong tailwind.

Watch Now: Q4 Market Outlook Webinar

This week, we released our Q4 Market Outlook Webinar featuring members of the Investment Committee. The discussion hones in on key developments so far this year across markets and the economy. We also spend some time talking about specific portfolio construction objectives that we are working on with clients to ensure that we are appropriately positioned for what may lie ahead.

We’re being intentionally brief in this morning’s commentary as we hope you’ll be able to spend some time listening to the webinar. As always, we welcome any questions or comments and look forward to diving deeper into Q3 earnings as they are released over the coming weeks.
