Significant IRS Change: Electronic Payments Only

Starting September 30, the IRS will no longer accept payments via paper check. All payments to and from the federal government must be made electronically. This means paper checks for tax payments will not be accepted and refunds will be issued through direct deposit only.

This change will impact taxpayers beginning with fourth-quarter 2025 estimated tax payments, which are due January 15, 2026. Those who filed extensions for 2024 or 2025 tax returns may be impacted sooner.

Executive Order 14247, signed by President Trump in March 2025, is intended to modernize federal payment systems and affects all taxpayers, including individuals who:

- Pay estimated taxes

- Receive IRS refunds

- Participate in installment agreements

- Have previously relied on paper checks
